A photography company, Tempest, is being investigated following allegations of discrimination after offering parents of children at Aboyne Primary School two options for their class pictures, one with and one without “complex needs provision pupils”. Parents expressed outrage at the company’s actions, with one claiming that she was “shocked” that the school photographs included what was effectively a choice over which pupils were visible in the image.
Aberdeenshire Council has apologised for the incident and states that the decision to offer the two options of photographs was not taken by the school and removed the link immediately.
Tempest Photography, which is one of the largest school photography companies, said they were looking into the matter and had spoken to the photographer and the school, and would make no further comment.
Natalie Pinnell, whose daughter attends the school, said she was outraged by the decision and could not understand how someone could consider it acceptable to give people a choice about whether to erase children from their history. She went on to say that the school was “absolutely appalled”.
In a statement, Aberdeenshire Council stated that they were aware of the situation and acknowledged the distress and hurt that the incident caused to some parents and carers. They added that the issue had been addressed with the photography company and emphasized that “every single child should be included, engaged and involved in their learning and school experiences.
