The UK government has announced that film director Christopher Nolan and his wife, film producer Emma Thomas, are to receive knighthood and damehood respectively for their services to the film industry. Nolan recently won his first-ever best director Oscar for his film Oppenheimer, which was produced by Thomas. Oppenheimer won seven awards in total at this year’s ceremony.

The couple have worked together on a string of successful films, including Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, The Prestige, Batman Begins, Insomnia, and Memento. They met while studying at University College London and were married in 1997. The pair have four children and reside in Los Angeles.

Thomas, upon accepting Oppenheimer’s best picture prize, said, “I think any of us who make movies dream of this moment. But it seemed so unlikely that it would ever actually happen.” Prior to this year’s ceremony, Nolan had been nominated for six Academy Awards but had never won an Oscar for directing.
