King Charles is returning to public engagements as he continues to receive treatment for cancer. Buckingham Palace has released a statement confirming the King is making enough progress for some public-facing work, which will commence with a visit to a cancer treatment centre on April 30th with Queen Camilla. The King is defined as “greatly encouraged” to be resuming public duties.

After his diagnosis on February 6th, the King withdrew from most of his public engagements. The Palace has not disclosed the type of cancer the King is battling, however, there is no current plan to communicate more details. It has been announced that the King has been treated for prostate enlargement, but not prostate cancer.

The King will not be embarking on a full summer programme of engagements, and the pace of his return will be “carefully calibrated”. Throughout his treatment, he has held private meetings and conducted official paperwork. Additionally, his weekly meetings with the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have continued, albeit sometimes not in-person.

If the King is unable to carry out his constitutional duties temporarily, two or more designated members of the Royal Family including the Queen, Prince of Wales, Princess Royal, and Duke of Edinburgh would replace him. The King’s role as the UK’s symbolic and ceremonial head of state requires him to host visiting dignitaries and meet foreign ambassadors and high commissioners. Any public-facing work undertaken by King Charles will be announced closer to the time and will be subject to further advice from his doctor
