One year after its launch in January 2025, Liv Life Liverpool, a service commissioned by Liverpool City Council, is marking a significant milestone by reflecting on its impact across the city. Developed in partnership with local residents, the programme offers compassionate, long-term support aimed at helping individuals achieve and maintain a healthy weight. The emphasis lies on fostering confidence, sustainable habits, and meaningful lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes or stigma.
Throughout its inaugural year, Liv Life Liverpool has seen over 1,100 residents engage with the service. The results are notable: 94% of participants have lost weight, with 78% reducing their body weight by at least 3%, and nearly half (46%) shedding 5% or more. This comes at a critical time, as 63% of adults in Liverpool are classified as living with excess weight. The programme’s approach prioritizes confidence-building and gradual habit formation to slow this upward trend.
One participant, Michael*, who was among the first to receive one-on-one coaching, describes the experience as transformative. He has lost more than a stone and a half, but values the shift in mindset even more. “After coaching I genuinely see food differently. It’s not the enemy, it’s something to enjoy, but in a way that works for my life. I can’t thank Liv Life Liverpool enough. It’s not just about the weight I lost; it’s about the life I’ve gained,” he shared. Recognizing the importance of early intervention, Liv Life Liverpool also collaborates with families and schools to instill healthier routines from a young age. Programs such as family cooking and healthy living sessions, delivered in partnership with Beautiful New Beginnings, have shown promising outcomes.
A headteacher in Liverpool highlighted the positive influence of these activities in local schools: “Liv Life Liverpool have made a huge impact on our school; their cooking sessions have allowed families to connect and cook healthier meals. In turn we have had meaningful discussions in school around healthy eating and packed lunches.” Liv Life Liverpool aligns with the city’s broader vision for a Fairer, Healthier Liverpool and complements initiatives like the Good Food Plan by taking a comprehensive, system-wide approach to tackling obesity. Reflecting on the programme’s success, Cabinet Member for Culture, Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Harry Doyle, stated, “Supporting residents to make sustainable, long-term improvements to their health is central to our commitment to improving wellbeing across the city. The impact of Liv Life Liverpool in its first year shows what can be achieved when communities are at the heart of delivery.” Meanwhile, Professor Matthew Ashton, Director of Public Health for Liverpool City Council, emphasized the necessity of moving beyond stigma: “We must move away from stigma and towards a whole-system approach to tackling obesity. The positive outcomes from year one show that this approach is working.” As Liv Life Liverpool begins its second year, it remains focused on expanding its reach, reducing inequalities, and helping more people achieve healthier, happier lives.
