Liverpool City Council has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure by installing new charging points on over 130 residential streets throughout the city. This development forms part of the Council’s broader initiative aimed at making sustainable transportation options more convenient and widely available for residents.

In collaboration with Otaski Energy Solutions (OtaskiES) and J McCann & Co Ltd, an additional 300 on-street charging units have been added. This nearly doubles Liverpool’s existing network, bringing the total number of charging points to over 670. These installations have been made possible through funding from the Government’s On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme, which targets households without private parking access — a category that includes roughly 40 percent of homes across the UK. Such infrastructure is considered vital to encouraging the transition to cleaner vehicles.

The newly introduced charging stations have been integrated into current street lampposts and provide charging speeds of up to 5kW. All units are powered by 100 percent renewable energy, supported by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs). Local residents and businesses contributed to the project by suggesting locations for the chargers, each site carefully evaluated for accessibility and practicality before installation.

Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, emphasized the importance of this expansion in overcoming barriers for EV adoption: “Many residents are keen to move to electric vehicles, but a lack of accessible charging points can be a real barrier, especially if they don’t have a driveway or garage. By installing hundreds of new charging points and almost doubling our on-street network, we’re removing that obstacle and ensuring EVs are a practical, accessible option for everyone who wants to reduce their environmental impact.” Additionally, a public event showcasing various EV models will be held on 8 May on Church Street and Lord Street, providing residents with expert advice and hands-on opportunities to explore sustainable vehicle options
