Later this month, Liverpool will host a series of events to observe Armed Forces Week, featuring a formal flag-raising ceremony, civic activities, and a military music concert in the city centre. These events aim to honour the dedication and sacrifices of serving personnel, veterans, reservists, and their families.
The official launch is scheduled for Monday 22 June at Liverpool Town Hall, where the Lord Mayor, Councillor William Shortall, will inaugurate Armed Forces Week during a civic reception. This ceremony will include raising the Armed Forces Day flag, a symbol of Liverpool’s support for the military community. Attendees will include senior figures from the Armed Forces, the Merchant Navy, and the Royal British Legion, reflecting the city’s deep-rooted ties to military and maritime traditions.
On Wednesday 24 June, National Reserves Day, Liverpool City Council will hold a special reception for council employees who serve as reservists, veterans, or cadet force supporters. This event acknowledges the valuable contributions these individuals make alongside their civilian careers. The council’s achievement of the Gold Award in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme highlights its ongoing commitment to backing the Armed Forces community.
The week’s events will culminate on Saturday 27 June with a military music performance beginning at 1pm on Castle Street, close to the Town Hall. Titled ‘Bringing the Beat: Military Bands Live,’ this concert will feature up to 70 musicians from The Band of The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment and The Pipes and Drums of The Liverpool Scottish Regimental Association. That evening, several iconic Liverpool buildings, including the Town Hall, Cunard Building, and St George’s Hall, will be illuminated in red, white, and blue in tribute to Armed Forces Day.
Councillor William Shortall commented on the occasion, saying: “Liverpool has a long and proud association with the Armed Forces. At a time of great instability around the world, it is vital we give thanks for the role service personnel make to keep us all safe. It is a chance to also reflect on the fact that the freedom we enjoy today is only thanks to the sacrifices of their predecessors.” Meanwhile, Armed Forces Champion Councillor Declan Henry added: “Many of us will have friends and family who have served or are currently serving in our Armed Forces, and will see the sacrifices they make in service, not just on the battlefield but at home as well. Armed Forces Week is an integral way in which we can demonstrate our thanks for their commitment to protecting our peace and security.”
