This week, Liverpool is hosting a significant gathering of European diplomats and dignitaries for an extraordinary business conference. The city has welcomed numerous EU ambassadors, state consul-generals, and other important figures to participate in this exclusive event designed to deepen connections between the UK and Europe.

The invitation-only conference, Liverpool Welcomes Europe, is organized by Liverpool City Council and marks its second successful year. The initiative began with an invitation from Council Leader Cllr Liam Robinson to the EU27 Ambassadors, aiming to reinforce Liverpool’s position as a key hub bridging the UK and European countries. The event commenced on the evening of 17 June with a civic reception at Liverpool’s Town Hall, where political leaders and private sector representatives from the UK and Europe gathered to open discussions.

Over the following days, the conference program focuses on various themes including culture, innovation, academia, and business collaboration, fostering opportunities that can lead to long-term partnerships. Liverpool Welcomes Europe highlights the city as a prominent Core City and involves partner hosts from across Liverpool who facilitate conversations on pressing topics such as devolution, place-based diplomacy, the influence of artificial intelligence on the music industry, Liverpool’s thriving film industry, and the challenges and prospects in the post-Brexit environment.

Attendees include a diverse group comprised of European Union representatives, mayors, local and international business leaders, and academic figures. Reflecting on the event, Cllr Liam Robinson stated, “Liverpool’s links with Europe have helped to shape who we are as a city, and it’s a real honour to welcome so many EU guests to experience the very best of what Liverpool has to offer.” He added, “We’re in a unique position where we have so many great things happening across so many industries that the Liverpool Welcomes Europe experience is hugely diverse from trade to touring, AI to art – it’s a reflection of the creative thinking so deeply rooted in Liverpool and this event is all about turning those ideas into real world impact.”
