The book Rave New World by Kirk Field is being adapted into a theatre show, set to premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe festival this summer. Titled Rave New World: Acid House Cabaret, the one-man show will run for two weeks at the Edinburgh comedy club Other Yin from August 13th. The show, which chronicles Field’s experiences as Mixmag’s first rave-focused journalist in the ’80s and ’90s, is described as a unique production exploring the “musical mischief” of the era.
Following its debut at the festival, the show will tour the UK alongside other “rave culture legends,” including Phil McIntyre. The production is a commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the second summer of acid house hysteria in the UK in 1989. The show’s synopsis invites audiences to “discover the true identity of DJ Roofrack, play Rave Family Fortunes and Have I Got Acid House News for You, embrace the absurdity of rave flyers, learn the real words to your favourite 90s dance anthems, and spin the songwheel of steel to choose the last tune of the night.”
Field’s book, Rave New World: Confessions of a Raving Reporter, was released in 2023 and won silver at the ARIA Awards. It offers a behind-the-scenes look at “the thrills and pills of 20th-century club culture” and has been celebrated by the likes of Robbie Williams, Carl Cox, and Fatboy Slim. An audiobook version of the book, written, narrated, and recorded by Field himself, was also released, and quickly became the UK’s best-selling dance music hardback and audiobook.
