The legendary techno artist Silent Servant will be honored on his birthday this week with a new episode of the Beats In Space podcast. The episode will feature a mix and interview recorded just months before his death in January of 2024. Host Tim Sweeney announced the episode on Twitter, saying it “was a difficult episode to put together but it’s dedicated to the late Silent Servant.”
Silent Servant, whose real name was John Juan Mendez, was a DJ and producer based in Los Angeles. He was a key member of the Sandwell District collective, which ran from 2002 to 2011 and was known for its influential sound in the techno genre. Mendez had a career in music that spanned over 30 years, and released his final work, ‘In Memoriam,’ in late 2023.
The podcast episode honoring Mendez’s legacy will air on August 9, on Apple Music 1 Radio. In his interview with Tim Sweeney, Mendez spoke about his vision for techno music and DJing, saying that “it’s all drum machine music, so it can all work together even if it’s from different genres.”
