Police have reportedly closed down Ibiza Underground, a nightclub located in the village of San Rafael between Ibiza Town and San Antonio. The club announced the closure via an Instagram story, stating that the police shut down the club without any prior notice. According to reports by Nou Diary, local authorities in Sant Antonio said that officers shut down the venue because it was holding a nightclub event in violation of its “catering license”. The City Council of Sant Antonio ordered the “sealing of the premises and a total suspension of activity” at Ibiza Underground due to the failed inspection, which verified club events were taking place and the kitchen was inoperative.

A statement published on Nou Diary’s website also claims that Ibiza Underground’s operation as a nightclub was posing “a serious risk both for the users of the premises and for the neighbours in the area and their right to rest”. Furthermore, the venue had not met regulations on noise control as it lacked proper acoustic treatment, violating Balearic Islands Law 7/2013. Consequently, the City Council reportedly issued a sanction of €60,000 against the club for infringing on this law, which requires the venue to hold a license if sound equipment exceeds 80dB.

The owners of the nightclub have not issued any statement since it posted on its Instagram story that the club had been closed due to police intervention. Another statement was posted on Ibiza Underground’s Instagram page, in which the club stated that they have no further news to share, and they are uncertain about when or if they can reopen. They added that they are working on finding a way to resume operations as soon as possible.

Ibiza Underground is not the only club in Ibiza to face closure, as police have been actively targeting and operating crackdowns on nightclubs with irregular licenses, with some previously facing heavy fines and closure due to noise complaints from neighbors. Some had their licenses revoked for major breaches of noise pollution regulation, which is a big issue on the party island
