A streetwear brand based in Bristol, Rerun, is showcasing its commitment to sustainability by repurposing balloon fabric offcuts into messenger bags. Bristol is renowned as the European birthplace of modern hot air ballooning and hosts the annual Bristol Balloon Fiesta. Leveraging this historic connection, Rerun is using recycled textiles from the largest balloon manufacturer in the world to create unique bags.
The co-founder of Rerun, Toby Thorpe, highlighted the cycling-friendly nature of Bristol as a key inspiration behind the bag design. The brand originated from a friendship formed on Bristol’s skateparks, where Thorpe and fellow skater Wilf Hastings identified the need for durable and affordable clothing. Initially importing and reworking preloved workwear from the US, Rerun expanded its operations globally, delving into textile waste hotspots like Indonesia and India.
Through collaborations with designer Theo Schaale, Rerun has transformed offcuts from Cameron Balloons into a 40-litre messenger bag that is both lightweight and stylish. Schaale emphasized the challenges posed by working with such lightweight and slippery fabric but highlighted its desirable characteristics.
