Milla Magee has won the Miss England beauty pageant and has been dubbed as the first plus-sized winner. The 23-year-old from Newquay wants to use her reign as Miss England to spread her message that “whatever your size it doesn’t matter.” Magee grew up in London where she was surrounded by rock ‘n’ roll thanks to her mother who worked at Creation Records, the label of Oasis and Primal Scream. Noel Gallagher’s ex-wife, Meg Matthews, is her godmother. Magee admitted that she tried to conform to what society told her she should look like and suffered body dysmorphia which causes people to believe they’re extremely ugly. However, looking back at curvy beauties such as Marilyn Monroe inspired her to make it her style.

Magee has credited surfing with saving her life and helping to shun the demands of the perfect body. Magee trained at Fistral in Newquay to become a lifeguard, and is now taking it further with her Go Far with CPR campaign which aims to call for the teaching of the resuscitation technique in schools. Magee has two grandfathers who died of heart attacks before she was born, and she recognises that knowing how to perform CPR can be the difference between life and death.

Miss England has evolved so much with women from all walks of life coming together. It’s not only about the physical on the outside, it’s about beauty from the inside. Magee said, “I feel like if I can use my voice and use this opportunity, not only to represent our beautiful country but also use my voice for positive change and good, that is what my purpose is. If I can be a representative to all those young girls who look at me and think they can relate to that, then I’ve done my job.” Magee has become a representative to all those girls who can identify with her and may feel more confident about who they are
