Emily Damari: Hostage says scars show 'strength' ahead of surgery

Emily Damari, a British-Israeli hostage who spent 15 months in captivity in Gaza, recently underwent a series of surgeries for the injuries she sustained during an attack by Hamas in October 2023. Damari, who lost two fingers after being shot during the attack, described her scars as symbols of “freedom, hope, and strength.” She emphasized that the pain and injuries she endured hold deep meaning for her.

Despite facing intense pain and challenging conditions during her captivity, Damari expressed gratitude that the complex operations on her hand and leg at Israel’s Sheba Medical Center went better than expected. She noted that her hand was showing improvement, and with physiotherapy, she hoped to regain better use of it. However, she acknowledged that her hand may never fully recover due to the extent of her injuries.

During her time in captivity, Damari recalled receiving minimal medical treatment, with only an outdated bottle of iodine provided to her to treat her wounds. She pointed out the unimaginable conditions in which hostages were held and expressed concern for those whose physical and mental health deteriorated significantly during their time in captivity. Damari called for the immediate release of all remaining hostages without further delay, highlighting the urgent need to address the suffering they endured.

Damari’s mother, Mandy Damari, shared the challenges her daughter faced while detained in Gaza, describing her as being “sewn up like a pin-cushion.” Despite the difficult circumstances, Damari expressed excitement about visiting the UK with her mother once she has fully healed and all the hostages are released. The pair has been invited to Downing Street by UK Prime Minister, where they will have the opportunity to personally thank those who supported Damari during her ordeal. Additionally, Damari mentioned her communication with the UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, who has shown support for her situation and expressed concern over the treatment of hostages at UN facilities during their captivity
