Catherine Morrison of BBC News NI reported on Fatima, a homeless woman battling lung cancer who is currently staying in temporary accommodation because she deems the offerings from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) unsuitable. Originally from Sudan, Fatima was diagnosed with lung cancer in January and underwent surgery to remove a tumor in March. Now, she is preparing for an extensive chemotherapy treatment.
Despite being a victim of human trafficking and having the right to stay in Northern Ireland, Fatima has struggled to secure a permanent home. As a result, she has been moving between temporary accommodations like B&Bs. The NIHE acknowledged the situation and mentioned that they are actively searching for other solutions, although they admit that the options for Fatima are limited.
Expressing her frustration, Fatima shared that she has informed the NIHE about her health condition and necessity for suitable housing. She stressed the urgency of finding a small house or single-unit for herself. Fatima has indicated that her recovery has been difficult, with ongoing issues stemming from her surgery. Additionally, in a letter to the NIHE, her doctor advised against placing her in shared accommodation due to her past traumas and complications from treatment.
Despite the challenges she faces, Fatima has been offered temporary accommodation in a hostel by the NIHE. She declined this offer citing limited visitation, as only hostel staff would be permitted to see her. Fatima conveyed her need for her friends’ support during this tough time, emphasizing the importance of human connection during her recovery. The NIHE spokesperson acknowledged the difficulties faced by Fatima and described her circumstances as “challenging.” They highlighted the offer of temporary accommodation in a facility that provides services tailored to intricate challenges. The NIHE is open to further discussions on this offer and is actively exploring alternative solutions, although they note the limited accommodation options suitable for Fatima’s needs and location preferences
