A young man’s heroic actions saved a mother and her one-week-old baby from a vicious attack by three dogs. William Newbury, 22, had been delivering baby gifts to a friend in Llanrumney, Cardiff, on Mother’s Day when he witnessed the horrifying assault through the letterbox. He bravely intervened by crawling through a window, sustaining injuries all over his body, including losing the function of two fingers on his left hand. Although South Wales Police confirmed the destruction of the three Staffordshire bull terriers involved, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Upon hearing screams as he approached the house, Mr. Newbury initially mistook the noise for a baby crying outside. To his horror, he discovered the mother and her infant under attack by the dogs when he peered through the letterbox. Despite his efforts to distract the animals by banging on the door and shouting, two of the dogs persisted in their assault. Mr. Newbury made a split-second decision to enter the house through an open window to help the distressed woman and baby.
As the dogs turned their aggression towards him, Mr. Newbury assisted in rescuing the mother and passing the baby out of the window. His attempts to fend off the animals were in vain, resulting in injuries that required hospital treatment. The young man recalled the harrowing 20-minute ordeal he endured, sustaining wounds across his body that ultimately led to a week-long hospital stay. Despite his physical recovery, Mr. Newbury continues to grapple with emotional trauma, experiencing recurring nightmares and vivid memories of the attack.
Following the incident, both the mother and her baby were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Mr. Newbury, on the other hand, was informed by medical professionals that one of his fingers would likely never fully recover its functionality. Despite his determination not to let fear dictate his actions, he remains cautious around dogs.
