The UK has taken a significant step in implementing sanctions against Russia by banning the export of video game controllers to the country. This decision comes as a response to concerns that these controllers could potentially be repurposed for use in piloting drones that are being utilized in attacks on Ukraine. The Foreign Office revealed this ban as part of a larger package of approximately 150 trade sanctions imposed on Russia.
In addition to video game controllers, other technology items that are commonly employed in the defense and energy sectors are now prohibited from being exported to Russia. This includes software that is used in the search for new oil and gas wells, as well as electronic components that could be utilized in weapons systems. The European Union had already put in place a similar ban on video games and joysticks earlier in the year.
Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty emphasized the necessity of these sanctions in limiting Russia’s military capability and disrupting its aggressive actions towards Ukraine. By cutting off crucial supplies and resources, such as energy revenues and specialist technologies for producing weaponry, the UK aims to weaken Putin’s war efforts. These measures are part of a larger international effort, together with the US and EU, to respond to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Notably, the UK also strongly condemned a recent missile strike by Russia in Kyiv that resulted in the death of nine individuals and injuries to many others. This attack occurred shortly after Ukrainian, US, UK, and European officials gathered in London to discuss potential solutions for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
