“You were warned not to do this by the fisherman but ignored him, and worse still you turned back and actively encouraged the group to follow you.

“You led your friends into a trap and you failed to help them escape from it. You abandoned them in the water, fleeing the scene without a backward glance.

“I accept your grief is both real and huge but it is dwarfed by the grief of the families affected by the loss of their loved ones in this entirely avoidable tragedy.”

Lloyd was sentenced to 10-and-a-half years in prison.

CPS senior crown prosecutor Helen Roberts said: “Some have lost their lives, others have had their lives changed forever, and my thoughts are with those families who have been devastated by what has happened.

“This was a grossly negligent act that led to three people losing their lives in the most tragic of circumstances and another surviving but still enormously impacted.”

“This was an act that could have easily been prevented had the individuals involved taken the appropriate advice for the conditions and not attempted to go over the weir.”
