Music Correspondent Mark Savage reported that Remember Monday, the UK’s hopefuls for Eurovision, decided to cover a song from Will Ferrell’s cult movie about the contest as the finals approach. They traveled to Iceland in recent weeks to film their version of Húsavík (My Hometown), originally performed by Rachel McAdams’ character Sigrit in the Netflix spoof, The Story Of Fire Saga. This cover release comes just three weeks before Remember Monday presents their own song, What The Hell Just Happened, at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland. Predictions from bookmakers suggest that the UK may not make it into the top 10, with countries like Sweden and Austria being among the top contenders for victory.
Despite the odds, Remember Monday expressed their desire to achieve a good result at Eurovision. Lead singer Holly-Anne Hull mentioned that there is a perceived stigma around the contest that they hope to help change. The group, consisting of Holly-Anne Hull, Charlotte Steele, and Lauren Byrne, initially started singing together in school and later landed roles in acclaimed West End productions such as Les Misérables, Phantom Of The Opera, and Six: The Musical. As dedicated Eurovision fans, they embarked on a whirlwind European press tour, performing in multiple countries and even serenading audiences on a Swiss mountaintop.
Their journey to Húsavík, Iceland saw the band overcoming personal challenges, such as Steele confronting her fear of flying by traveling in a propellor plane and a helicopter. Visiting the enchanting Elf Houses and singing with a choir of Icelandic schoolgirls who previously sang at the Oscars added to their memorable experience. The band expressed gratitude for being welcomed in the picturesque town and highlighted the beauty of Iceland as unmatched in their eyes. The entire adventure was captured in a music video of their cover song.
Leading up to Eurovision, the BBC announced a special program featuring Graham Norton in conversation with Remember Monday on May 9, offering viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the band’s preparations for the competition in Basel. Meanwhile, BBC Radio 2 disclosed that Sara Cox will join the presenting lineup for this year’s contest, with commentary on the semi-finals alongside Richie Anderson. The grand final on May 17 will be hosted by Scott Mills and Rylan. Rehearsals for the contest kicked off on April 25 at the Jakobshalle arena, with stand-ins performing the 37 entries until the contestants arrive in Switzerland in early May. Last year’s Eurovision winner was Swiss singer Nemo with their song The Code, while this year’s favorite is Swedish contender KAJ with their track Bara Bada Bastu. If Sweden wins, they will claim their eighth Eurovision victory, surpassing Ireland as the most successful nation in the competition’s history
