Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi is currently in a medically induced coma after undergoing the initial phase of surgery for a severe abdominal injury. The 27-year-old Nigerian player suffered the injury when he collided with the post during the 2-2 tie against Leicester at the City Ground. His injury occurred in the 88th minute as he tried to connect with a cross from Anthony Elanga.

Following the surgery on Monday night, Awoniyi is still in the hospital, with the remainder of the procedure scheduled to take place on Wednesday. According to a statement released by Forest on Tuesday, Awoniyi is said to be “recovering well” post-surgery. Despite receiving initial treatment on the field after the incident, Awoniyi visibly struggled when the game resumed, despite attempting to play through the injury.

Awoniyi, who was signed by Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, had only been on the pitch for five minutes as a late substitute before suffering the injury. Club owner Evangelos Marinakis was visibly concerned about the handling of Awoniyi’s injury and expressed his worries to manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the game. Marinakis is receiving regular updates on Awoniyi’s condition, as the player continues to recover in the hospital.

Forest emphasized the importance of prioritizing player health and safety in light of Awoniyi’s injury. The club stated on Tuesday that the incident serves as a “powerful reminder of the physical risks involved in the game and the necessity of always putting a player’s well-being first.” The entire football community is united in wishing Awoniyi a speedy recovery as he continues his journey towards full health
