Jamie Roberts is embarking on a new chapter as he transitions from a decorated rugby career to becoming a junior doctor in the NHS, describing it as a “privilege.” Having graduated from Cardiff University’s school of medicine twelve years ago, Roberts is now set to begin his two-year foundation training in south Wales hospitals.
During his rugby career, Roberts amassed an impressive 94 caps for Wales and earned the title of Player of the Series for the British and Irish Lions on their tours of South Africa in 2009 and Australia in 2013. Despite the success and fond memories rugby brought him, Roberts expresses his excitement for what lies ahead in the medical field and the potential for equally fulfilling experiences.
Reflecting on his journey, Roberts shares that his passion for rugby initially overshadowed his interest in medicine while in school. However, his love for problem-solving, mathematics, and science eventually led him to pursue a career in medicine, which he now sees as the perfect fit that aligns with his intrinsic motivations. The arduous path to completion of his undergraduate degree spanned seven years, punctuated by his rugby commitments and triumphant victories on the field.
After hanging up his rugby boots, Roberts remained engaged in academic pursuits, seeking solace and growth in postgraduate studies at Loughborough University and Cambridge University. Now, armed with a return to medicine exam clearance in November 2023, Roberts is poised to resume his medical training with a potential focus on reconstructive surgery or orthopaedics, leveraging his personal experience with extensive injuries sustained during his rugby career.
In joining the ranks of former Wales internationals who transitioned to medicine, Roberts expresses his respect for the NHS workforce and the challenges ahead in his new role. Recognizing the intrinsic rewards and connection with patients that come with being a recognized figure in Welsh sport, Roberts is eager to embark on this next chapter, confident that the dedication and passion he poured into rugby will propel him to new heights in his medical career
