Two Scots shot dead in Spain had criminal gang links

Two men from Scotland, affiliated with a criminal gang based in Glasgow, were tragically shot and killed at a bar in Spain. The individuals were identified as Eddie Lyons Jr and Ross Monaghan, the latter being acquitted of a prominent gangland murder in the past. The incident occurred when a masked assailant opened fire at Monaghans Bar in Fuengirola, Andalusia, on a Saturday evening, resulting in the deaths of both men.

Reports from local media indicated that the shooting took place around 23:00, with a vehicle pulling up outside the bar before the masked gunman unleashed gunfire and subsequently fled in the same car. Ross Monaghan had previously been linked to the high-profile killing of notorious gangland figure Kevin ‘Gerbil’ Carroll. Monaghan was implicated in the murder and accused of disposing of evidence, but was later acquitted due to insufficient proof. Notably, he was shot in the shoulder in Glasgow in 2017 and had reportedly relocated to Spain following the incident.

Eddie Lyons Jr had also faced violence in the past, being shot and injured in an attack believed to be orchestrated by Carroll in 2006. The ongoing feud between the Lyons and Daniel crime families in Scotland has resulted in a series of violent incidents over the years, spanning more than two decades. While Police Scotland refrained from commenting on any potential ties to recent gangland conflicts, directing inquiries to the Spanish authorities, BBC journalist Guy Hedgecoe highlighted a spate of shootings in the Costa del Sol region linked to drug-related crimes in recent weeks.

Situated on the seafront, Monaghans is a popular bar frequented by tourists and expatriates. The establishment was showing the UEFA Champions League final on the night of the attack. The Foreign Office confirmed that they had not been approached for consular assistance following the incident but reiterated their readiness to aid any British nationals if necessary.
