Old Trafford’s Stretford End is traditionally one of the most atmospheric stands in English football

Though his career has spanned four decades, Jones still enjoys the thrill of a proper derby.

“There’s an increasing rarity about them because with so many clubs, fans are so spread out now,” he says.

“When you get a Liverpool-Everton one or a Manchester United-City, you know it’s going to be special.

“I’m not saying the players play extra hard, but you can see why the fans enjoy them. They are huge occasions.”

As for his early, unknown caller, Jones didn’t pursue that line of inquiry.

“They had their moment in the sun, as it were, and they didn’t call back,” he laughs.

“Maybe they realised commentary wasn’t for them.”

Fast-forward to these days when every top-flight goal is available to watch via an app or website and Jones might understand better why they were so keen to be at Craven Cottage 40 years ago.

Given the choice, he would do it all over again.
