An invitation called the “Manu Regia” was delivered to the White House by representatives from the British Embassy in Washington. While the dates of Trump’s visit have not been confirmed, September is the most likely timing for the event. Additionally, there will not be an informal meeting between Trump and King Charles this summer prior to the state visit.
Despite King Charles traditionally spending his summer break in Scotland and Trump planning to visit his new golf course in Aberdeenshire, an informal meeting between the two leaders is not on the agenda for the summer. A Buckingham Palace aide expressed the King’s anticipation of hosting President Trump and the First Lady later in the year, given their long-standing acquaintance. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner expressed Parliament’s delight regarding the upcoming state visit, which will mark Trump’s second visit to the UK.
During his previous state visit in 2019, President Trump was hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Formal preparations for Trump’s second state visit are now underway. On a separate note, King Charles presented a letter to Trump during a visit to the White House in February, proposing a meeting to discuss the upcoming state visit at either Dumfries House or Balmoral in Scotland. Traditionally, second-term US presidents are not offered full state visits, but Trump’s cordial relationship with the royal family has led to this unique invitation.
In response to concerns raised about Trump’s “threats to Canada,” The Times reported that Buckingham Palace hesitated to rush into a state visit. According to a senior source, the King did not wish to bestow a state visit upon a president who was undermining his sovereignty over Canada. The Palace and government officials are considering the timing of the state visit in relation to Trump’s second term.
