Renowned rapper Stormzy was recently granted an honorary Doctorate in Law from the prestigious University of Cambridge for his impactful work in supporting black students in pursuing higher education. The 31-year-old artist, known by his real name Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr, established the Stormzy Scholarship in 2018 to provide financial assistance to black UK students seeking to study at the university. The scholarship program, described as “transformative” by Prof Deborah Prentice, vice-chancellor of the university, has already assisted 56 undergraduates with full tuition and maintenance support, thanks to funding from Stormzy’s £Merky Foundation and HSBC UK.
During the award ceremony at the university, Stormzy was one of eight public figures recognized with honorary degrees. In his remarks during the launch of the scholarship, he emphasized the importance of black students being aware of the possibilities available to them, including attending a prestigious institution like Cambridge. The impact of his scholarship program has been significant, leading to the acknowledgment of his efforts with the honorary degree.
Aside from Stormzy, other notable individuals who received honorary degrees during the ceremony included Dame Katherine Grainger, Lady Arden of Heswall, Sir Simon Russell Beale, and Professor Angela Davis.
