A joint funeral was held for two prominent crime figures who were shot dead in a Spanish bar more than a month ago. Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan were both victims of a fatal shooting in a beachfront bar in Fuengirola, Costa del Sol, on May 31. Both men were watching the Champions League final on the night of the incident when a lone gunman targeted them just before midnight. Spanish police accused Michael Riley, a 44-year-old from Liverpool, of the murders, with a full extradition hearing set for later this year.

The funeral took place at Bishopbriggs Crematorium in East Dunbartonshire, where hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their respects to Lyons Jnr, aged 46, and Monaghan, aged 43. The coffins were carried in two silver hearses, adorned with floral tributes reading “Dad” and “Son.” Both men were associated with the Lyons crime group, known for engaging in a violent feud with the Daniel family and their allies for over two decades. Lyons Jnr had survived a previous assassination attempt 18 years ago by a Daniel clan enforcer named Kevin “Gerbil” Carroll.

Following the funeral, a recap of the violent history between the rival crime groups was given. The inter-group feud resulted in several casualties over the years, including a shooting outside a Glasgow primary school involving Monaghan and two associates of the Daniel group. Monaghan was acquitted in 2012 due to insufficient evidence, but mysteries surrounding the killings persist. Chief Supt Pedro Agudo Novo of Spain’s police force made conflicting statements about the murders, linking the killer to the Daniel clan, while Scottish detectives have not found any evidence connecting the shootings to the feud.

With ongoing investigations and an international arrest warrant issued for Michael Riley, the case remains unresolved. Riley’s refusal to consent to extradition back to Spain complicates matters, leaving questions unanswered about the motive behind the double murder. The violent events have sparked a renewed wave of gangland violence in Scotland, with Police Scotland making significant arrests in response to the escalating tensions within the criminal underworld. As the investigation continues, authorities are grappling with the complexities of the case and the potential ramifications of unresolved feuds amongst crime groups
