MasterChef: John Torode subject of racist language allegation in report

Television personality John Torode has been accused of using racist language, following an inquiry into allegations against his MasterChef co-host, Gregg Wallace. Torode took to Instagram to address the allegation, stating that he apologized immediately after the incident was said to have occurred in 2018 or 2019. Despite this, he claimed to have no memory of the event and denied that it ever took place.

The investigation into Wallace’s behavior on the show resulted in 45 upheld allegations, for which he issued an apology. Additionally, two separate allegations of racist language were confirmed, one of which involved Torode. In a statement, Torode acknowledged that he was the individual accused of using racial language, although he insisted that he does not believe the incident occurred as described.

Wallace, who was terminated from the program following the upheld allegations against him, expressed regret for any distress caused by his actions. The report outlined a total of 83 allegations against the TV presenter, with the majority pertaining to inappropriate sexual language and humor, as well as culturally insensitive or racist remarks. This situation has sparked a broader conversation about workplace conduct, prompting calls for improved standards in the creative industries from figures such as Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy and human rights barrister Baroness Helena Kennedy.

It was revealed that Wallace had stepped away from his role on MasterChef in November 2024, pending the outcome of the investigation. The report also highlighted the need for accountability and action to address unacceptable behavior within the industry, emphasizing the importance of ensuring dignity, fairness, and respect for all individuals involved.
