A situation of urgency unfolded as more than 60 households were evacuated from their homes due to concerns regarding potential explosive items at a residence. Reports indicated that a man was behaving suspiciously at a house on South Liberty Lane in south Bristol, leading to an arrest by the police. The Avon and Somerset Police were alerted around 17:55 BST, signaling a potential threat involving explosive materials in possession of an individual.

In response to the escalating situation, a significant cordon was established around the residential area, prompting a declaration of a major incident. Residents were swiftly evacuated to a nearby community center as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties associated with the incident, although a bomb disposal team has been deployed to address the potential threat effectively.

The bomb disposal team’s efforts began around 19:50, shortly after the arrest of the suspicious individual at 19:10. With public safety as the primary concern, a 100m cordon was enforced by the authorities to secure the area. A total of 63 properties, encompassing homes on South Liberty Lane, Risdale Road, and Swiss Lane, were placed within the cordon, necessitating the evacuation of residents to a designated safe space at the Ashton Vale Community Centre on Risdale Road.

Currently, approximately 50 individuals have sought refuge at the community center, while others have sought shelter with friends and family, outside of the cordoned-off area. The public has been urged to steer clear of the affected zone, and the police have expressed gratitude for the community’s patience and cooperation amidst the ongoing situation
