In order to maintain a sufficient supply of blood, the Welsh Blood Service is calling on sixth form students to become donors. With an aging population contributing to a decrease in regular blood donations, just 3% of the population currently donates regularly, and only 15% of those under 30 donate at all. To combat this issue, the service has launched a campaign called Gwaed Ifanc/Young Blood to not only secure blood stocks for the future but also encourage individuals to join the stem cell registry. Ysgol Stanwell in Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan has been actively involved in supporting the Welsh Blood Service since 2015.
Saif, a 17-year-old head boy at Ysgol Stanwell who aspires to study medicine, expressed the satisfaction of knowing that your blood donation has made a difference. He highlighted the personal connection one feels when receiving a text message informing them where and when their blood donation was used. Other students like Niamh, 17, shared that they were not nervous about donating blood, especially when they witnessed their parents donating before. Elliot, another pupil, admitted his initial fear of pain but was pleasantly surprised by the painless process and stated he would donate again without hesitation.
The Welsh Blood Service collects around 100,000 blood donations every year, each with the capacity to save up to three lives. Eleri Schiavone from the Welsh Blood Service emphasized the need for more young donors to ensure future blood supplies for the 19 hospitals in Wales that rely on these donations. In addition to blood donations, the campaign aims to recruit over 6,000 individuals aged 16-30 and between 16-45 from black, Asian, mixed, or minority ethnic backgrounds to join the stem cell registry annually. Currently, around 2,000 people in the UK require a stem cell transplant each year, but finding a match remains a challenge, particularly for those from minority ethnic backgrounds
