Four individuals from Scotland were among hundreds of activists detained by Israeli forces following the interception of an aid flotilla en route to Gaza. MSPs in the Scottish parliament identified Jim Hickey, Margaret Pancetta, Yvonne Ridley, and Sid Khan as the detainees. First Minister John Swinney stated that he would maintain close communication with the UK government regarding their well-being. The aid flotilla, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), consisted of approximately 40 boats carrying food and medical supplies, according to Israel’s Foreign Ministry, which also stated that those involved would be deported.
The interception led to the detention of an estimated 443 individuals by Israeli forces. Social media videos, intended for release in the event of interception, have been posted for each of the four Scots involved in the incident. Mr. Hickey was on board the Suelle vessel, Mr. Khan on the Adara, while Ms. Ridley and Ms. Pancetta were aboard the Omar Al Mokhtar. During First Minister’s Questions at Holyrood, Scottish Green co-leader Ross Greer and Scottish Labour MSP Pauline McNeill urged Swinney to demand the release of the detainees. Greer highlighted the bravery of the activists, emphasizing the importance of their mission to break Israel’s siege of Gaza and provide essential supplies to Palestinians in need.
Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate campaigner, was also among those detained in the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla. Israel’s navy intercepted the vessels, citing the approach to an active combat zone and violation of a naval blockade as reasons for the interception. The UK Foreign Office expressed concerns about the situation, stating that they were in contact with the families of British nationals involved and urging the Israeli authorities to resolve the situation safely in accordance with international law. Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that those detained were being transferred to an Israeli port for deportation and reassured that they were safe and in good health
