The Crash Detectives: Swedish motorcyclists Johan Takats and Helena Engstrom were involved in a serious accident on a Welsh road that led to a life-saving response from their bike. Takats lost control of his BMW R 1250 GS Adventure bike on a slip road of the A40 in Raglan, Monmouthshire, causing both riders to sustain serious pelvic and leg injuries. Thanks to the bike’s automatic SOS feature, an emergency call was triggered, alerting authorities to their exact location.
The incident, which occurred on 26 May 2022, was documented for the BBC series The Crash Detectives, showcasing how the bike’s technology played a crucial role in getting help to the injured riders promptly. PC Richie Wyatt, a forensic collision investigator, highlighted the importance of the bike’s GPS system in quickly pinpointing the riders’ location and sending aid their way. The group of four riders, traveling through Europe, was on day six of their journey when the accident happened.
Following the crash, it was revealed that poor road conditions, including potholes and debris, contributed to the accident. Investigator PC Wyatt reconstructed the sequence of events leading up to the collision, ruling out high speed but identifying road surface issues as a significant factor. Despite the harrowing experience, both Takats and Engstrom expressed gratitude for the help they received from emergency personnel and medical staff during their treatment and recovery.
After extensive surgeries and two weeks of care at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, the riders were flown back to Sweden for further treatment. Despite the challenging road to recovery, Takats and Engstrom eventually returned to their passion for biking. With their repaired motorcycle back on the road, the group embarked on a tour to Croatia and have plans for future trips.
