Next month will see the fifth annual Christmas carol service hosted by the Princess of Wales, an event that continues to highlight people’s contributions to society. This year’s occasion will feature British actors Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Hannah Waddingham, who will provide readings during the ceremony. The service is set to be held on December 5th at Westminster Abbey and is designed to celebrate the “power of love and togetherness.”
The event builds around a theme chosen deliberately to reflect the many forms love can take, especially in a world that often feels divided and isolated. Organisers emphasize that the service will blend traditional and contemporary elements to represent a wider community, encompassing people of all faiths or none. This inclusivity aligns with Princess Catherine’s aim to acknowledge those across the UK who make positive contributions to their communities.
Reflecting on last year’s service, the focus then was also on love, but with particular attention to empathy and generosity—a sentiment deeply personal to Catherine, who had faced a cancer diagnosis in 2024. She expressed relief at completing chemotherapy in September and shared in January that she is now in remission. Previous years have also seen memorable moments such as in 2021 when she surprised attendees with her piano performance alongside musician Tom Walker, honoring those who supported their communities during the pandemic.
In addition to the readings by the actors, attendees will enjoy carols performed by the Westminster Abbey choir, supported by various musical acts. The event will also feature a festive nature-themed display created by horticulturist Jamie Butterworth. The Royal Horticultural Society will contribute by providing wreaths made by their ambassadors and schoolchildren. Beyond the main service, 15 other community carol events with the same theme of love and togetherness will take place throughout the UK, including venues such as a community farm in Gwent and an arts centre in Newbury. The Westminster Abbey service is scheduled for broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
