A 12-year-old boy has been hailed as a hero after he took control of his mother’s car when she lost consciousness while driving on a busy road. Nicola Crump, from Ebbw Vale in Blaenau Gwent, was driving along the A40 with her son Zac when she suddenly became unwell and fainted behind the wheel.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Zac quickly grasped the steering wheel and managed to steer the vehicle to safety, guiding it into the central reservation. Nicola later recalled, “All I remember is waking up on the other side of the road not knowing what happened.” The pair had been en route to the Birmingham Christmas markets when Nicola began feeling overheated near Ross-on-Wye. After pulling over in a hazardous spot without a hard shoulder, she lost consciousness, unintentionally pressing the accelerator and causing the car to accelerate to almost 60mph.
Recognising the danger, Zac attempted to wake his mother but, upon realising she could not be roused, he took decisive action. By steering onto the grass verge, he managed to slow and stop the vehicle safely. He then switched off the engine and dialled emergency services, maintaining composure despite his fear. Zac said, “I was really scared but I knew I had to do something. When I was on the phone to 999, I saw her belly was moving so I knew she was breathing.”
Paramedics and police arrived swiftly at the scene. Nicola was assessed and found to have very low blood pressure but neither she nor Zac sustained injuries. Their car was damaged but not beyond repair. The family was eventually collected by relatives and shared a moment of respite nearby, where Zac was offered a complimentary drink in recognition of his courage. Nicola praised her son as her “little hero” for his calmness and swift thinking, which averted a potentially tragic outcome. The police, impressed by Zac’s poise during the emergency call, have invited him to their Worcester station to receive a certificate honouring his bravery. Nicola, who described fainting as “really unusual,” plans to undergo further medical tests before driving again
