Newly released documents from the US Department of Justice appear to confirm the authenticity of a photograph showing Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor with his arm around Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual abuse. The former prince had consistently denied any improper conduct and had questioned the legitimacy of the photograph, even stating he did not recall ever meeting Giuffre. However, an email dated 2015, purportedly from Ghislaine Maxwell and addressed to Jeffrey Epstein, includes a draft statement acknowledging that in 2001, Maxwell was in London when Giuffre met several of her acquaintances, including Prince Andrew. The message indicated that a photograph was taken, presumably for Giuffre to share with friends and family.

Giuffre’s family, speaking to the BBC’s Newsnight, described the email as a moment of vindication. Her brother, Sky Roberts, remarked, “It truly does vindicate Virginia… she was not lying this entire time,” adding, “It’s a moment where we’re really proud of our sister.” The email further stated that Maxwell was unaware of any inappropriate activity occurring at her residence. Although parts of the draft statement were redacted, the content strongly suggests that Maxwell was referring to Giuffre. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor settled out of court with Giuffre in 2022 without admitting any liability or issuing an apology. His representatives have not yet commented on these recent revelations.

Additional documents from previous years also bring the photograph into focus. A 2011 email from Epstein, made public by members of the US House Oversight Committee, acknowledged that Giuffre had been on Epstein’s plane and had a picture taken with Andrew. During a 2019 Newsnight interview, Mountbatten-Windsor denied meeting Giuffre and suggested the image may have been altered, stating, “Nobody can prove whether or not that photograph has been doctored but I don’t recollect that photograph ever being taken.” He also made an infamous claim that he was not at Maxwell’s home on the day in question but instead was dining at a Pizza Express in Woking.

The release of the latest Epstein files has stirred strong emotions within Giuffre’s family. Tears were shed by Amanda Roberts, Giuffre’s sister-in-law, who described the disclosures as a “whirlwind” and expressed a bittersweet sentiment: “I’ve felt like a moment of such overwhelming emotion because I wish she was here to see this, she fought so hard and so long and she was still so strong.” The family remains hopeful that legal action will be taken against Prince Andrew. Meanwhile, the documents also reveal further unsettling details about Mountbatten-Windsor’s ongoing association with Epstein, including photos showing him in compromising positions and correspondence that suggests invitations to Buckingham Palace. Epstein died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, and Prince Andrew was stripped of his royal titles and residency in October of the previous year
