A 29-year-old man has been convicted for the murder of a five-month-old baby boy, Jensen-Lee Dougal, who died after sustaining severe brain injuries caused by violent shaking. The infant, described by his mother Jordan Dougal as a “happy baby” adored by his family, passed away on 31 March 2024. The injuries were inflicted by Thomas Morgan, who was caring for Jensen-Lee at the time.

The incident took place in their home on Players Avenue, Clydach, Swansea. Morgan violently shook Jensen-Lee in a state of rage following an abusive text exchange with an ex-girlfriend. The jury at Swansea Crown Court viewed harrowing CCTV footage showing Morgan carrying the unresponsive and limp infant from the house. Neighbours witnessed this distressing moment and after Morgan came out with Jensen-Lee in his arms, they attempted to assist.

Medical experts provided compelling testimony during the trial, detailing the extent of Jensen-Lee’s injuries. These included catastrophic brain damage, multiple fractures, haemorrhaging behind the eye, and rib fractures. Neurosurgeons described the brain injury as “devastating,” with witnesses stating the wounds were among the worst they had ever encountered. Professor Stavros Stivaros from Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital noted that the shaking was so severe that anyone witnessing it would have immediately intervened. He further explained that the baby would have lost consciousness nearly instantly due to the violence, stating it could not have been caused by rough play or even an attempt at resuscitation.

Morgan, who was regarded as Jensen-Lee’s stepfather after beginning a relationship with Jordan Dougal and moving into their home in mid-January 2024, showed no emotion when the verdict was read. Jordan Dougal testified, recalling how she never experienced any problems with Morgan looking after her son and had believed she had found a stable family life. Despite Morgan’s initial failure to call emergency services, neighbours acted quickly to summon help, performing CPR until paramedics arrived. The judge, Justice Stacey, expressed gratitude toward those who tried to save Jensen-Lee, as well as to the jury, legal teams, police, and the family for their resilience throughout the difficult trial. Morgan was found guilty of murder and one count of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, with sentencing scheduled for 25 February. Det Insp Lianne Rees of South Wales Police acknowledged that while the conviction provides some measure of justice, it cannot alleviate the family’s “profound heartbreak.” She also commended the determination of all involved in the case and the family’s remarkable strength
