Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale delivered a remarkable performance in the snowboard cross mixed team event, winning gold and securing Team GB’s very first Winter Olympic title on snow. Their triumph was especially poignant after both had faced disappointment in their individual competitions. This victory also added to their World Championship success from 2023.
This achievement marked a historic moment for Great Britain, as it was the first occasion the country won two gold medals at a single Winter Games. Prior to this, British Olympic medals on snow had only been bronze, earned by snowboarder Jenny Jones in 2014, freestyle skier Izzy Atkin, and snowboarder Billy Morgan in 2018.
The event unfolded with the men’s race first, where Nightingale finished in second place, trailing only France’s Loan Bozzolo. This strong performance set up Bankes perfectly for the final leg. Demonstrating exceptional speed and skill, she propelled past Italy’s Michela Moioli, narrowly winning by 0.43 seconds. Moioli and Lorenzo Sommariva took silver for the second consecutive Olympics, while Bozzolo and Lea Casta claimed bronze.
Both Bankes and Nightingale had experienced setbacks before their gold run. Bankes, a former individual world champion and two-time overall World Cup winner, had been eliminated in the quarter-finals of the women’s event, repeating her result from four years ago. Nightingale also fell short in the men’s round of 16 but rose to the occasion in the mixed team event. Despite entering the competition seeded 13th, their determination paid off. A large group of British fans gathered at Livigno Snow Park to cheer them on, waving union jacks and creating an electrifying atmosphere. Their excitement grew as the duo progressed through the quarter-finals and semi-finals, ultimately securing a place in the final, where the chance for a podium finish remained promising despite the unpredictable nature of snowboard cross.
