Adam Mitula, who was acting as an interim campaign manager for Reform UK in the Tameside region ahead of Thursday’s Gorton and Denton by-election, has been suspended by the party due to racist and antisemitic remarks he allegedly made on social media. The party initially refrained from confirming his suspension, but Mitula himself confirmed it on Monday.
The controversy arose following the release of evidence showing Mitula’s use of a deeply offensive racial slur targeting black people, alongside a derogatory statement about Jewish women. Additionally, he appeared to endorse a Holocaust denial claim, suggesting that the number of Jewish victims of the Nazis had been exaggerated. Mitula insists that his remarks were taken out of context and claimed he was actually defending Jewish people.
The claims against Mitula were brought to light by the anti-racism organization Hope Not Hate, which collected the evidence from Mitula’s now-deleted X (formerly Twitter) account. In response, Mitula stated, “I’m confirming my suspension as a Reform member pending investigation. The comments in question were taken out of context, and actually defended the Jewish community.” However, he declined to comment on the racial slur he used towards black people.
Reform UK has kept its disciplinary proceedings confidential, refusing to comment further on the situation. The Gorton and Denton by-election involves more than 76,000 potential voters located across Denton in Tameside, as well as Gorton, Levenshulme, and Burnage in Manchester
