Award-winning rapper Ghetts, whose birth name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison following a tragic hit-and-run incident in northeast London. The 41-year-old was convicted at the Old Bailey after admitting to causing the death of 20-year-old university student Yubin Tamang through dangerous driving.

The fatal collision occurred in the early hours of 18 October 2025 on Redbridge Lane East in Ilford. Tamang, originally from Nepal, was struck by Clarke-Samuel’s BMW M5 as he crossed the road. The court heard that Clarke-Samuel was driving at more than double the speed limit, at over 60mph in a 30mph zone, and did not stop after hitting Tamang. The student was subsequently hospitalized but died two days later from severe injuries.

During the trial, prosecutor Philip McGhee revealed that Clarke-Samuel had been drinking on the evening of the crash, with his blood alcohol level exceeding the legal limit by one and a half times. McGhee described the horrific impact, explaining, “Mr Tamang was catapulted into the air before crashing down on the roadway. He sustained catastrophic injuries.” In response to the tragedy, Tamang’s family expressed their profound grief, stating, “We speak today with hearts broken beyond repair. Our only child, a precious soul, has been taken from us far too soon.”

Additional evidence presented in court included CCTV footage showing Clarke-Samuel’s reckless driving, captured moments before and during the collision. An Uber driver who arrived on the scene initially mistook Tamang for an abandoned bundle of clothes but quickly realized the severity of the situation and called emergency services. Investigators traced damaged parts found at the scene, including a broken wing mirror casing, directly to Clarke-Samuel’s car, which was later located near his residence with visible damage to the windscreen, bonnet, and front bumper
