Scottish Labour MP Joani Reid has announced she is stepping back from the party following the arrest of her husband, David Taylor, on suspicion of espionage activities linked to China. Reid declared she is “voluntarily suspending herself” from the Labour Party as internal investigations proceed. While Reid is not currently under police investigation and denies any wrongdoing, she emphasized that she will not continue to serve as a Labour MP until the inquiry is complete.
David Taylor, a businessman and former adviser to Labour, was detained alongside two other men—Matthew Aplin and Steve Jones—on suspicion of aiding a foreign intelligence service. The pair of additional suspects, both with previous political advisory roles, were arrested in Wales. Counter-terrorism police have conducted searches of several properties connected to the men in locations including Cardiff, East Kilbride, and London. All three have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
The Labour Party has characterized the allegations against Taylor as extremely serious, and it is understood that both Taylor and Reid have been administratively suspended by the party. Reid explained her decision to step down temporarily was motivated by a desire to avoid distracting the government and to shield her children from unwanted attention. She described the recent week as “the worst of my life” and expressed her willingness to cooperate fully with the party’s internal review.
Additional details indicate Taylor’s involvement in politics extends to previously running for North Wales police and crime commissioner as a Labour candidate. Reports also show that Reid’s consultancy business received interest-free loans totaling over £23,000 from two of Taylor’s firms. Taylor himself obtained significant financial benefits—over £600,000 as an interest-free loan from a now-defunct construction company, plus further payments from a communications consultancy—though no allegations of misconduct relating to these financial transactions have been made. Reid, the granddaughter of the well-known trade unionist Jimmy Reid, has recently relocated to East Kilbride after working primarily in London. The investigation remains ongoing with a scheduled bail return in May
