Radio 1’s Greg James received an unexpected boost during his ambitious 630-mile tandem bicycle ride when Prince William chose to join him for a part of the journey. Greg, who has been cycling through England, Wales, and Scotland as part of a challenge covering 1,000 kilometers, was five days into his eight-day trek when the Prince hopped on for a 30-minute pedal through the scenic South Yorkshire countryside. The ride is aimed at raising funds for Comic Relief, with donations surpassing the £1 million mark by the time of their joint ride.

Throughout the ride, Greg has been accompanied by various well-known personalities, including comedian Joe Lycett and Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas. Speaking after the royal surprise, Greg shared with fellow Radio 1 hosts that he was still coming to terms with the event. “I’ve got so many flies in my mouth because I’ve been cycling with my mouth wide open. All our jaws are on the floor from how mad that all was,” he said. Greg also admitted feeling nervous when he realized the Prince would be riding with him, describing it as the moment he gripped the handlebars the tightest during the challenge. Reflecting on the experience, he humorously noted, “But I didn’t kill the future king.”

Prince William joined Greg just outside Doncaster, expressing his admiration for the radio host’s dedication to charity. He remarked, “What you’ve done is set an example about helping out. That’s the thing. It’s volunteering some of your time, putting yourself through a bit of pain at the same time, and supporting others. It’s something we do very well in this country, but we don’t really shout about it enough.” He also praised the entire team behind the challenge for their impressive collective effort. Earlier in the week, the Prince had sent Greg a letter wishing him luck before he embarked on the ride. The two have recently collaborated on a special Radio 1 Life Hacks episode discussing male mental health and suicide.

Greg James is no stranger to endurance challenges, having completed five triathlons in five days in 2016, followed by a cycling and climbing journey across Scafell Pike, Snowdon, and Ben Nevis two years later. The radio presenter mentioned that his plans could shift depending on his father’s health, who is gradually improving. The tandem bike ride continues to be broadcast live on Radio 1, allowing fans to follow the journey in real time
