The organisers of this year’s Derby 10k have acknowledged that the racecourse was approximately 400 metres (1,312.3 feet) shorter than the official distance. This conclusion came after a detailed review was conducted following feedback from participants whose GPS devices indicated discrepancies in the length of the course.
The Derby County Community Trust initiated the investigation shortly after the event, which took place on Sunday, after runners reported inconsistencies in their tracked distances. The course had been modified this year to accommodate ongoing flood defence construction work. Consequently, the race required a remeasurement performed by a certified member of the Association of UK Course Measurers (AUKCM).
Upon review, the trust revealed that the official measurement carried out by the AUKCM contained an error. While the association is regarded as a reliable partner, the trust acknowledged that mistakes can occasionally happen during large events. In response to the findings, AUKCM stated: “Following the Derby 10K on Sunday 15 March 2026, concerns were raised regarding the course distance. AUKCM carried out a verification measurement on 17 March, which confirmed the course, as run, was approximately 400 metres short. AUKCM acknowledges the error and the impact on runners’ results.”
Expressing regret over the situation, a representative of the Derby County Community Trust said, “We share the disappointment that this year’s race didn’t meet our usual high standards and we are grateful for the understanding and feedback we’ve received from the running community. Thank you for your patience and continued support. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Derby 10K next year.
