Gemma Kingsley, a model aged 50 from Beadnell, Northumberland, has been sentenced to seven years and seven months in prison after being convicted of romance fraud. Over a period of four years, Kingsley deceived several men by fabricating stories about an imminent inheritance, tricking them into spending large amounts of money to support her extravagant lifestyle. She claimed to be due to inherit around £80 million from her late grandfather, which she used as part of her elaborate web of lies.

During the sentencing at Swindon Crown Court, Judge Jason Taylor KC described Kingsley as someone “blinded by [her] greed” who manipulative employed anything necessary to maintain her lifestyle. The court also heard that two of Kingsley’s victims were emotionally vulnerable, having recently gone through divorces. One victim’s statement, read aloud in court, revealed the deep emotional impact of the fraud: he expressed ongoing anxiety and feelings of betrayal, sharing, “I am still struggling to come to terms with what Gemma did to me,” and highlighting how the experience harmed his relationship with his daughter.

Kingsley’s crimes extended beyond emotional manipulation; she also committed financial fraud through theft and the use of false bank card details, spending thousands on luxury hotel stays, including at a five-star resort in the French Alps. At an earlier hearing, she pled guilty to multiple charges including theft, fraud by false representation, and possession of fraud-related implements. Judge Taylor condemned her actions sharply, calling her a “con woman who traded on her good looks,” and remarking on her “insatiable” greed and blatant duplicity.

The judge further noted Kingsley’s lack of remorse and her calculated approach in exploiting each victim fully before moving on to the next target. She is required to serve half of her sentence in custody before becoming eligible for release on licence. The case highlights the damaging impact of romance fraud on victims, both financially and emotionally, as well as the consequences offenders face under the law
