The Metropolitan Police have taken five officers off frontline duty following the discovery of a bag containing firearms and a Taser on a street in London. The bag was found on Tuesday evening by a member of the public near the home of London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan, according to reports.

Police believe the bag was accidentally left behind by officers on duty shortly before it was discovered. The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has launched a review to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Inside the bag, authorities found a sub-machine gun, a pistol, a Taser, and some ammunition.

A member of the public contacted the police around 21:40 BST after spotting the bag. Emergency services arrived within seven minutes and secured the weapons, taking immediate action to recover the items safely. The force acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and is urgently examining how it occurred, recognizing public concern.

According to Jordan Griffiths, who came across the bag, he initially noticed it on the roadside and alerted his partner. After inspecting the contents and taking photographs, he called the police, who responded quickly and appeared surprised by what they found. Griffiths was told by officers that the weapons belonged to one of the security personnel assigned to Sir Sadiq Khan. A spokesperson for the Mayor described the event as serious and emphasized the importance of preventing similar incidents in the future
