Steven Lyons, a notorious figure within Scotland’s gangland circles, has been deported to Amsterdam following his arrest at Bali’s international airport ten days earlier. The 45-year-old was apprehended on 28 March shortly after arriving at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport on a flight from Singapore. On Tuesday, officers from Spain’s Guardia Civil escorted Lyons onto a flight from Jakarta, marking the next step in his extradition process.
Once detained, Lyons was seen being led from police headquarters in Denpasar clad in bright orange prison overalls and wearing a black face mask, his hands bound with cable ties. Indonesian authorities confirmed that he was flown from Denpasar to Jakarta before boarding a flight to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. Upon arrival in Amsterdam shortly after 10:30 BST, Lyons is expected to continue his journey to Spain to face charges. The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office labeled him a “mafia boss and Interpol fugitive,” with Bugie Kurniawan, head of the office, emphasizing Indonesia’s commitment to preventing the country from becoming a refuge for international criminals.
Authorities in Bali have described Lyons as the leader of a transnational criminal organization involved in drug trafficking and money laundering. Untung Widyatmoko, secretary at Interpol’s Indonesia bureau, detailed that Lyons’ network operates across several countries including Spain, Scotland, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Turkey. Both Lyons and his wife are wanted by Spanish authorities; the couple previously lived in Spain before relocating to Dubai. Their arrests coincided with coordinated raids by Scottish and Spanish police targeting members of Lyons’ criminal group across multiple locations including Scotland and Spain.
