A suspect has been apprehended in connection with the murder of a well-known businessman from Leeds that occurred over two decades ago. The victim, John Luper, aged 57, lost his life during a home invasion on 16 February 2004 at his residence on Sandmoor Drive in Alwoodley.

During the break-in, Luper was confronted by a group of masked assailants while walking his dog near a neighbor’s driveway late at night. The intruders then forced him back into his house, where they restrained his wife, daughter, and their au pair with duct tape in an upstairs room. The robbers made off with cash and valuables, including jewelry valued at approximately £100,000 and a rare Cartier wristwatch.

After the attackers fled, Luper’s family managed to free themselves and found him in a downstairs room. Despite emergency services being called out and resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination revealed that his cause of death was asphyxiation.

West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that following forensic analysis, they arrested a 55-year-old man in Bradford, who is now in custody. Detective Superintendent Damian Roebuck emphasized the ongoing commitment of the investigation, stating, “It is more than 22 years since John’s brutal murder and we are no less determined to find out who killed him.” He also appealed to the public for information relating to any suspicious inquiries about John Luper or attempts to sell jewelry around the time of the murder, highlighting the crucial role such details could play in the investigation
