Early on Sunday morning, a fire ignited aboard the Nord Houston, a ship loaded with 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal, while it was docked at Newport Docks. Firefighters responded promptly to the incident, arriving at the scene around 05:40 BST to tackle the blaze.

The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) reported deploying a substantial number of resources to contain the fire. Their efforts included surrounding the blaze and continuously evaluating the strategies being used to ensure the incident could be brought under control safely and without unnecessary delay.

Authorities confirmed that there was no threat to human lives or nearby properties. In their response, SWFRS coordinated closely with various organizations, including Associated British Ports, harbour officials, Natural Resources Wales, local police, and Newport council, to assess any possible environmental consequences resulting from the fire.

Meanwhile, members of the public have been advised to steer clear of the dock area to allow emergency services to operate effectively and minimize any risks
