Nancy Pexton has been found guilty of murdering her sister, Jennifer Abbott Dauward, a film director, at her residence in north London. The incident took place at Abbott’s flat in Mornington Place, Camden, on 10 June of the previous year. Abbott, also known by the name Sarah Steinberg, was 69 years old at the time and was nine months older than Pexton.
The grim discovery was made on 13 June when a neighbour forced entry into Abbott’s home and found her lying dead in the living room with gaffer tape covering her mouth. A post-mortem examination later revealed several stab and slash wounds on Abbott’s body, along with a defensive injury on her right hand, suggesting she tried to protect herself. The prosecution also revealed at the Old Bailey trial that Abbott’s diamond-encrusted gold Rolex watch had been found in Pexton’s bag when she was arrested five days after the body was discovered.
On the day of the attack, Abbott was last caught on doorbell camera footage returning from walking her corgi, Prince, at around 07:30 BST. Phone records showed that Pexton called Abbott at 11:36 and later traveled by bus to her sister’s flat at 12:45, departing approximately an hour afterwards. Following these events, Pexton contacted her GP, claiming to have taken an overdose, and was subsequently admitted to hospital, where she remained until her arrest on 18 June.
During the trial, Pexton, who has no fixed address, denied any involvement in her sister’s death but chose not to testify, instead attending court via video link from Bronzefield prison. After the jury returned a guilty verdict, Judge Anuja Dhir KC postponed sentencing to a later date, scheduling it for Friday
