The Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their children, have chosen the name Cwtch for a young eastern grey kangaroo at Australia Zoo. The name, which means “cuddle” in Welsh, was revealed by conservationist Robert Irwin, son of the late Steve Irwin, via a collaborative Instagram post with the royal family.

In a video recorded at the Queensland-based zoo, surrounded by kangaroos, Irwin expressed his gratitude to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis for selecting the name. He explained, “[Cwtch] is the absolute perfect name for a joey kangaroo, ’cause at this age, they love a cuddle and they spend most of their time inside that pouch with their mum.” He further mentioned that Cwtch is now an official member of the Australia Zoo family.

Pronounced “kutch,” the name was chosen as part of a broader initiative to draw international attention to wildlife conservation. Irwin highlighted the significance of kangaroos in the Australian ecosystem, stressing the importance of preserving these animals. “Thank you for your support with our wildlife conservation efforts. It is so important that we conserve all of our animals, including the icons, the kangaroos,” he stated. He underscored their crucial role: “These guys play a very important role in the Australian bush, and out there in the ecosystem, they are just crucial.”

Prince William has been a prominent advocate for environmental conservation and serves as an ambassador for The Earthshot Prize, a global program he helped establish to promote innovative solutions to environmental challenges. Irwin collaborates with the prince to raise awareness and support for conservation projects, complementing his own charity, Wildlife Warriors.
