John Siddell, aged 41, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, along with an extended licence period of two years, after being found guilty of sexually abusing three boys in Leicestershire between 2018 and 2021. Siddell attempted to evade justice by pretending to have severe disabilities, including being unable to walk or talk. His brother, James Siddell, 44, supported this deception by claiming John was unfit and acting as his spokesperson during police interviews. However, CCTV footage later revealed John engaging in activities inconsistent with his supposed condition, leading to the uncovering of the ruse.

Initially, two psychiatric reports concluded that John was unfit to stand trial because he appeared to be mute and wheelchair-bound, which led to a judge ruling him unable to undergo a court trial. A fact-finding hearing was then held, during which a jury found John guilty of all charges against him in 2024. Subsequent evidence showed that John had been seen socializing and walking at a social club, contradicting claims about his disabilities. James Siddell also pleaded guilty alongside his brother, accepting one count of perverting the course of justice. He was sentenced to two years and nine months in jail.

The court was informed of disturbing accounts from the victims, ranging in age from four to 14 years old. The eldest victim initially disclosed the abuse to his mother, while two others reported remaining silent out of fear. One victim described becoming emotionally distressed, experiencing nightmares, and withdrawing from daily activities. Prosecutor Claudia James emphasized how the brothers maintained their deceit to delay and avoid legal proceedings, with James actively helping to sustain John’s false incapacity claims.

Several incidents exposed the falseness of John’s alleged disabilities. In February 2023, although James requested a GP letter to postpone John’s court appearance due to health reasons, John was spotted attending an Elvis tribute event and watching a football match at a social club, even posing for photos with pints in hand. In April 2024, CCTV captured John sitting upright and talking to his brother before his behavior changed upon seeing solicitors. Later, John was filmed walking outside his home and climbing the stairs of Leicester Crown Court on all fours, despite claims he was incapable of movement. The judge, Keith Raynor, criticized John’s consistent deception of hospital, custody, court staff, and even his own legal representatives. Defense statements acknowledged John’s learning disabilities, including epilepsy and autism, describing him as vulnerable, while comments regarding James highlighted the challenges of their “generationally dysfunctional family
