A driver and his passenger have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms following a fatal crash that occurred while they were recorded speeding at more than 130mph in a 30mph zone. The incident took place on Manchester’s Kingsway, where 50-year-old Sylvester Abayomi was struck and killed. The two men, Uways Hussain and Usmon Mahmood, had documented their reckless behavior, which included inhaling from a balloon, running red traffic lights, and weaving dangerously through heavy traffic.
Uways Hussain, the driver, received an 11-year and eight-month prison sentence for causing death by dangerous driving. His accomplice and car owner, Usmon Mahmood, was sentenced to 12 years and nine months for aiding and abetting that offense. Greater Manchester Police described the crash as one of the most extreme examples of speeding the force has witnessed. At Manchester Crown Court, Judge Nicholas Dean condemned the incident, emphasizing that the crash was completely avoidable and the result of a deliberate, sustained pattern of highly dangerous conduct.
The fatal collision happened shortly after 04:30 GMT on 9 March when Abayomi entered the road legally on a green light. The vehicle, driven by 20-year-old Hussain from Burnage and owned by Mahmood, was traveling at 139mph mere seconds before impact, having run a red light. Abayomi’s partner, Denise, remembered him as “the most caring soul and gentle person you could ever meet. He had time for everybody and is loved by everyone. Syll will be sadly missed.”
Detective Sergeant Thomas Johnson labeled the case as one of the most extreme instances of dangerous driving his team had ever dealt with. He expressed sympathy for the victim’s family and friends while stressing that no sentence could ever fully compensate for the loss of life. Johnson highlighted the defendants’ complete disregard for safety and called on the public to challenge and report dangerous driving whenever witnessed, hoping that this verdict offers some justice to those affected by the tragedy
