A mother and her son have been sentenced to prison following a violent incident in Essex that ended with a driver being forced off the road and into a tree. The pair pursued the victim over a distance of 13 miles, resulting in a dangerous confrontation on 10 October 2022.
Hollie Dance, aged 50, and her 26-year-old son Thomas Summers chased the man from Westcliff-on-Sea to Basildon. Dance followed in her BMW along the A127 route, while Summers drove a rented Toyota, maintaining the pursuit. The chase culminated in Uppermayne, Basildon, where Dance rammed the victim’s vehicle into a tree, causing him to be ejected from his red Peugeot.
Prosecutor Richard Scott described how the driver made increasingly panicked calls to the police throughout the chase. After Dance’s collision, Summers further rammed the man’s car, pushing it into a nearby bush. Scott stated that the motivation behind the attack appeared to be revenge. The victim, who works as a chef, sustained fractures to his shoulder and foot. In his statement, he denied allegations that the incident was connected to Dance’s daughter, labeling such claims as “rumours.” He expressed confusion about why he was targeted and said he often reflects on the events of that night.
At Basildon Crown Court, Dance was sentenced to four years in prison and Summers received a five-year term. Dance, who has a criminal history dating back to 1996, was convicted of possessing incapacitant spray found at the scene, having already admitted to dangerous driving. Summers was found guilty of affray and had pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. His defense counsel described the chase as “an impromptu pursuit without forward thinking or planning.” The judge acknowledged the tragic background involving Dance’s daughter but emphasized that “two wrongs do not make a right,” condemning the sustained and perilous nature of their actions. Both defendants were also banned from driving for two years after their release from prison
